Why Do You Need a Patent Attorney?

When you invented something that is of special use to the general public, a patent is needed. But before you can conduct the proceedings in patent application, you must first have knowledge on patent law, rules and procedures. In order to achieve this, you must get the aid of a patent attorney. You can of course prepare and submit all the necessary documents needed for the patent but without the assistance of a patent attorney, there is a great possibility that you might put yourself into a considerable difficulty. There is also a possibility that the patent granted to you does not adequately protect your product or your invention. So, it is always advisable that you employ the services of a registered patent attorney or a patent agent.

When selecting a patent attorney, you must choose someone with adequate experience. Through the internet, you can do a research on various attorneys and select one that you think fits your needs. You can also get recommendations from someone you know. In the United States, the United States Patent and Trademark Office or USPTO governs the rules and regulations of a patent attorney or a patent agent. When they are not recognized by USPTO, they can never represent inventors. They maintain a registry of patent attorneys and agents and to be admitted to this registry, all agents and attorneys should conform to all the USPTO regulations. In order to be qualified in the USPTO, they should have good moral character and good reputation. Furthermore, the patent attorneys and patent agents should have all the legal and technical qualifications. They must have their college and law degree in engineering or physical science and most importantly, they must pass an USPTO examination.
